- Canary Islands
One of the easiest winter sun destinations for UK travellers, the Canary Islands are under five hours from London and bask in around seven hours of sunshine a day, with an average high of 21°C. It’s also much quieter during February than over the summer months, which makes it ideal for families.
Aside from beaches, the Canary Islands have plenty to offer families, including go karting at Go Karting San Bartolome on Lanzarote, the Pirate Museum on the same island, and hiking and shopping on Tenerife.
A nine-hour flight from the UK, Florida offers sunshine and family fun, but without the excessive humidity and crowds of the summer.
The obvious attraction in Florida is Disney World, so Orlando should be your base. There’s more than just Disney, though: Universal Studios and SeaWorld are also located here, alongside the Kennedy Space Centre and Busch Gardens. If you want some beach time, head down to the beautiful Florida Keys before your flight home.
If your family is the beach-loving type, the Caribbean is full of options for a chilled out half-term break. Avoiding hurricane season, it’s one of the best times to visit this part of the world.
The Dominican Republic sports the well-developed resort strip of Punta Cana, but there are more resorts around the coastline popping up all the time, as the country becomes increasingly popular. Its capital Santo Domingo is a historic city and the first place Columbus reached in the New World, so it’s a good starting point if you’re keen to add some culture to the mix. Other family-friendly islands include Barbados, St Lucia and Antigua.
Thailand is at its finest during the month of February, as the southern islands receive little rain and lots of sunshine. The islands are the best bet for families, with beaches, temples and small towns to be explored.
Phuket is the largest Thai island and has the most resorts. It also has stacks of activities from
waterparks to zorbing. Koh Samui is another top island for families, with lots of great family resorts and safe beaches on which the kids can play.
If you need more than beaches to entertain your family and your kids are over 10, why not try a safari holiday in Kenya? With the best tourist infrastructure in Africa, Kenya has been hosting families on safaris for decades. After a few days on safari, families can relocate to the Kenyan coast or Zanzibar for a few days in the sunshine.
There are some really fun places for kids in Kenya, such as Giraffe Manor in Nairobi, where the giraffes famously join the residents for breakfast. The Maasai Mara Game Reserve is a short hop from the capital and offers some of the best game viewing in Africa, especially for lions and cheetahs.
